PR IN INDONESIA To obtain permanent residency in Indonesia, known as a KITAP (Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap), most applicants must first hold a temporary stay permit (KITAS) for a minimum number of years. Pathways to a KITAP include marriage to an Indonesian citizen, long-term employment, investment, or retirement. Pathways to permanent residency KITAP for foreign spouses Foreign nationals married to an Indonesian citizen can apply for a KITAP after having lived in Indonesia for two consecutive years on a marriage-sponsored KITAS. After ten years of marriage, this can be converted into a lifelong KITAP. KITAP for investors Foreign investors can obtain a KITAP, which allows for long-term residency. Requirements typically include: Holding a significant share in an Indonesian company (a PT PMA) and serving as a director or commissioner. Meeting a minimum investment capital as stipulated by the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), which can be IDR 10 billion or more. KITAP for retirees Foreigners aged 55 and older can apply for a KITAP for retirement purposes. The eligibility requirements include: Having held a retirement KITAS for at least four or five consecutive years. No plans to work in Indonesia. Proof of financial stability, with a minimum monthly income of at least $1,500. Evidence of health and life insurance. The sponsorship of a licensed travel agency. KITAP for long-term employees Expatriates working in Indonesia can be eligible for a KITAP after holding a work KITAS under the same company for at least three to four consecutive years. Golden Visa for investors Indonesia also offers a "Golden Visa" for investors who make a substantial capital investment. This visa provides residency for 5 to 10 years and can also lead to a KITAP, often with an exemption from the sponsor requirement. The application process Obtain a KITAS: The first step for most applicants is to secure a temporary stay permit (KITAS) based on their eligibility category, such as marriage, employment, or retirement. A KITAS is typically valid for one year and is renewable. Meet the residency requirement: After living in Indonesia for the required period on a KITAS, you can apply to convert it to a KITAP. Gather documents: Required documents typically include a valid passport, proof of continuous residency, a sponsor letter (if applicable), and financial statements. Submit the application: The application is submitted online or at the local Indonesian immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi). Attend an interview: Applicants are generally required to attend an interview with an immigration officer. Important considerations Validity: The KITAP is initially valid for five years and can be extended indefinitely, typically every five years. Multiple Exit and Re-Entry Permit (MERP): A KITAP holder receives a two-year MERP, allowing them to travel in and out of the country. Sponsorship: In most cases, a KITAP requires a valid sponsor, such as a spouse, company, or retirement agency. No dual citizenship: Indonesia generally does not recognize dual citizenship for adults. If you eventually pursue naturalization, you would be required to renounce your current citizenship.
